Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) primarily affects young and middle-aged women, manifesting as a chronic pain disorder accompanied by tender points. These tender points are specific areas on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs that elicit pain when pressure is applied.

Additional symptoms associated with FMS encompass:

  • Stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Headache
  • Depression
  • Impaired Muscular Performance
  • Difficulty with Concentration and Memory (called Fibro Fog).

As the cause and pathophysiology of FMS remain elusive, various treatment approaches have been suggested, including antidepressant therapy, biofeedback, and both aquatic and land-based exercises. Several studies have indicated that exercise programs can contribute to functional recovery and reduction in pain.

Physical therapists possess valuable expertise in the rehabilitation of individuals with Fibromyalgia and can serve as a valuable resource in managing the condition.
