Guyon’s Canal Syndrome(Handlebar Palsy)

Similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, cyclists commonly experience a condition where the ulnar nerve gets compressed in its canal over the wrist. This often occurs when the palms of the hands rest on bicycle handlebars for extended periods.

The treatment approach for this condition resembles that of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It involves modifying activities, such as using padded gloves while cycling, taking adequate rest, utilizing splints, and undergoing hand therapy which may include ultrasound/iontophoresis and specific exercises. In rare cases, surgery may be considered as a treatment option.

Possible Treatment Goals

Minimize Reoccurrence Risk

Boost Muscle Strength and Power

Alleviate Nerve Compression

Augment Oxygen Circulation to Tissues

Optimize Range of Motion

Facilitate Relaxation

Empower Self-Care of Symptoms

Enhance Endurance for Extended Activities
