Mallet (Baseball) Finger

This fracture occurs when the tip of the finger is subjected to trauma, causing it to forcefully bend down towards the palm and resulting in the tearing or avulsion of the extensor tendon. This type of injury is frequently seen in sports such as baseball and basketball during attempts to catch a ball. Common signs and symptoms include pain, swelling, and an inability to fully extend the affected finger.

The standard treatment approach involves immobilizing the finger with a splint to maintain it in a straight position for a period of 6-8 weeks. However, in certain cases, surgical intervention may be necessary, where the finger is pinned in a straight position along with the use of a splint to facilitate proper healing and alignment.
