Labral Tears

Labral Tears

The labrum, a cartilage ring encircling the shoulder socket (known as the glenoid), plays a crucial role in deepening the socket and providing stability. It is represented as number "5" in the image above, appearing as a thin blue ring around the glenoid. Labral tears commonly occur due to trauma, shoulder instability, or repetitive throwing motions, such as those seen in baseball players.

The primary signs and symptoms of a labral tear include painful clicking, locking, or popping sensations. Instability may be present since the labrum is unable to adequately hold the ball (head of the humerus) in the socket. Diagnosing labral tears can be challenging, but medical intervention typically involves an MRI for accurate diagnosis, followed by arthroscopic repair. It is important to note that a specific type of labral tear called a superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) tear often involves the biceps tendon as well.
