Patello-femoral Pain (Commonly Called Chondromalacia Patella)

Chondromalacia, which refers to the softening of the patellar cartilage, is a frequently misdiagnosed condition. The actual softening of cartilage can only be observed through surgical visualization. The accurate diagnosis for pain and swelling originating beneath the kneecap is Patello-femoral Pain.

To alleviate discomfort, treatment involves implementing rest, ice, compression, and elevation to relieve pain and control swelling. Anti-inflammatory medications, bracing, and physical therapy are often effective in managing symptoms. It is crucial to gradually strengthen the quadriceps muscles for proper recovery. In some cases, the use of foot orthoses may provide additional relief. Surgery is rarely necessary, but it may be considered to realign the kneecap by releasing tight structures on the outside while reinforcing inner structures.

By following these treatment approaches, individuals with Patello-femoral Pain can find relief and improve their knee function.
