Ankle Sprains/Instability
Ankle sprains are frequently encountered injuries that typically happen when the foot undergoes forceful inversion or inward twisting. The resulting damage can range from a minor tear (Grade I) to a partial tear (Grade II) or a complete tear (Grade III) of the outer ligament complex, involving the anterior talofibular and sometimes the calcaneofibular ligaments. It is uncommon for injuries to the inner aspect of the ankle to occur without accompanying fractures. Symptoms of an ankle sprain include pain on the lateral side of the ankle, swelling, and a feeling of instability. Stress X-rays can be useful in ruling out any potential fractures. Immediate treatment for an acute ankle sprain involves rest, ice, compression, elevation, and the use of a brace to support the injured ankle. Early rehabilitation plays a crucial role in promoting a speedy recovery. Surgical intervention, such as ligament reconstruction, is typically reserved for cases of recurrent ankle sprains.
