When should I actually start physio after surgery?
Depends on what surgery you had, but usually sooner is better than later. For lots of operations, gentle physio can start within a few days. Sometimes you can even start the same day for certain things. Your surgeon needs to give the green signal first. And we will talk to them about when it makes sense. What we normally suggest is booking an assessment before your surgery so we can do prehab work and have a plan ready to go for after. That way there is no delays once you are cleared to start.
How long is this going to take?
It varies a lot. Depends on what surgery you had, how old you are, your general health, and how much you stick with the exercises. Small keyhole surgeries might need 6-8 weeks. Big joint replacements often take 3-6 months for full recovery. Spine stuff can be anywhere from 8 weeks to several months depending how complicated it was. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we first see you. Just remember everyone is different. Some people bounce back quicker. Others need more time.
Do I really need prehab or can I just focus on after?
You can skip prehab if you want. But honestly you would be making recovery harder for yourself. People who do prehab physiotherapy before surgery have less pain after, get out of hospital quicker, and recover faster. That is what our experience says. It is especially worth it for bigger surgeries like joint replacements or spine operations. Think of it like training before a big event.
Is physio going to hurt after my operation?
We are not going to lie, some discomfort is normal. You are working on moving things that just got operated on. So there will be some uncomfortable moments. But there is a difference between good discomfort (like when you are stretching) and bad pain. We watch how you respond and keep things at a level that is okay – usually around 3-4 out of 10 if we are rating pain. We are not going to push you into anything dodgy. Most people find it challenging but manageable. The temporary discomfort is worth it when they see the results.
What do I bring to the first appointment?
Bring all paperworks from your surgeon – operation notes, discharge papers, scan results. Wear comfy clothes that let us see and access where you had surgery easily. If you are on crutches or using a walking frame, bring that too. A list of your medications is helpful too.
