What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation, Really?
You can think of a Functional Capacity Evaluation as a practical test that shows what you can actually do physically. It is not what you think you can do or what your doctor assumes you can do. But the FCE test tells us what you can really handle when it comes to work tasks. It is pretty straightforward. We put you through various physical activities that mirror your job (or the job you are hoping to get back to). And we document everything. This FCE test for work injury cases gives everyone involved – your employer, the insurance, your legal team if there is one – solid proof of where you are at physically.
We look at the basics in this test. Can you lift that 30-pound box? How long can you stand before you need a break? What happens when you are doing repetitive reaching or bending? The evaluation usually runs about 4-6 hours. Sometimes we split it over two days if that works better for you. Our therapists watch how you move, take notes on what is difficult, what is manageable, and what is just not happening right now. The whole point is to get real answers about whether you are ready to go back to work. It tells us if your job needs some tweaking to fit your current abilities. It gives you a real answer about if you genuinely need more time to heal.
