Functional Capacity Evaluation

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation, Really?

You can think of a Functional Capacity Evaluation as a practical test that shows what you can actually do physically. It is not what you think you can do or what your doctor assumes you can do. But the FCE test tells us what you can really handle when it comes to work tasks. It is pretty straightforward. We put you through various physical activities that mirror your job (or the job you are hoping to get back to). And we document everything. This FCE test for work injury cases gives everyone involved – your employer, the insurance, your legal team if there is one – solid proof of where you are at physically.
We look at the basics in this test. Can you lift that 30-pound box? How long can you stand before you need a break? What happens when you are doing repetitive reaching or bending? The evaluation usually runs about 4-6 hours. Sometimes we split it over two days if that works better for you. Our therapists watch how you move, take notes on what is difficult, what is manageable, and what is just not happening right now. The whole point is to get real answers about whether you are ready to go back to work. It tells us if your job needs some tweaking to fit your current abilities. It gives you a real answer about if you genuinely need more time to heal.

Why FCE Test Actually Matters

Functional capacity evaluations are not just bureaucratic hoops to jump through. They tell you if you are rushing to go back to work too soon. You need to know if you are rushing or you would mess yourself up worse than before. We have seen it happen before and it is not pretty. The FCE gives you real data that you can point to when you are having those awkward conversations with your boss or the insurance adjuster who thinks you are milking it.
It also helps figure out if there is more rehab work to do before you are truly ready. Sometimes people are surprised by what they cannot do yet. This is valuable information. The assessment takes emotions and opinions out of the equation. And honestly that clarity is worth a lot when everyone has got different ideas about your recovery timeline.

Support After FCE Test at the Clinic

The evaluation itself is not the end of the story. We actually follow through. This is not as common as it should be. We work with your employer and whoever else needs to be in the loop to make sure the recommendations actually get implemented instead of just filed away somewhere.
Follow-Up
Within a short time, we sit down with you and go through everything we found. We explain what it means in normal language. If you specifically want the technical version, we are happy to accommodate it. You will understand your restrictions, what accommodations make sense, and what the realistic timeline looks like. And you get a full copy of the report to keep.
Sometimes the evaluation shows you are not quite there yet and that is okay. We will map out what needs to happen next. Maybe you need some strength training, endurance building, or learning better ways to move. We are practical about timelines and goals. No false promises. You will get only honesty about what will help you get back to doing what you need to do.
We will reach out to your employer, case manager, whoever is managing your situation, and make sure they actually understand what you can and cannot do. We will work out a gradual return schedule. Having someone who knows the medical side talk to the work side helps prevent a lot of miscommunication and unrealistic expectations from both directions.

Questions People Actually Ask About FCE Tests

Usually around 4-6 hours total. But it depends on your situation and what kind of work you do. Sometimes we split it into two sessions if one long day would be too much for you, especially if you are still dealing with a lot of pain or fatigue. We will talk through timing when you book so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
No. And if it does, you need to speak up immediately. We will be watching you the whole time to make sure you are not overdoing it. The point is not to prove how tough you are or push through pain. It is to see what you can safely manage. You are in charge here. If something hurts too much or feels wrong, we stop. Simple as that.
Usually workers’ comp covers it if it is a workplace injury. If your employer asked for it, they might pay. For disability or legal cases, talk to your lawyer or insurance company about who is covering it. We can help figure this out before you come in so there is no surprises about the bill later.
Having someone drive you or keep you company in the waiting room is totally fine. They cannot be in the room during actual testing though. It needs to stay objective. And honestly, having someone drive you home is not a bad idea since you will probably be pretty tired afterwards.
Just comfortable clothes you can move in. You can bring your workout clothes. Closed-toe shoes that are sturdy. If you normally use a brace or cane or anything like that, bring it. Also bring your referral papers, ID, insurance card, etc. Also you must bring a list of your current medications.
